Frederick Hutchison
1871 - 1953
|
Born in Montréal, Frederick Hutchison studied there as well as in Paris and New York City where he settled in 1905. Until his retirement in 1939, when he returned to his family home outside of Montréal, he worked at the City College of New York but spent most of his summers in rural Quebec.
Although Hutchison did some portrait work, he preferred to paint Canadian landscapes, especially the lower St. Lawrence River region near Montréal.
He received honors on both sides of the border as a long-time member of New York City’s Salmagundi and National Art clubs and as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy. In 1937, he won a major American competition but was disqualified when it was learned that he was not a U.S. citizen.

Saint Urbain Village shows Hutchison’s impressionistic technique, typical of his time. In the company of other artists, Hutchison often visited this picturesque region about 50 miles east of Quebec City.
